i was given a 85 ford ranger with alot of problems i was wondering how do i fix that and whats it mean when the carberatour butterfly doesnt go down it stays up

The gauge is sometimes unpluged from to top of the gas tank. If the truck has sat for awhile the float in the gas tank may be stuck.
The butterfly will stay open in warm weather. The automatic choke will not let it close until the weather is cold.

do you mean the guage doesnt work,if so try running a ground wire off the frame to the tank,and as far as the butterfly,sounds like the linkage on the side of the carb.

for the carb concern either the linkage is sticking or the choke thermostat is faulty as for the fuel gauge take it to someone who knows what they r doing

I'm geussing one of two things

1. the little knoby is stuck
OR
2. the measurer at the back is stuck.

Bad choke pulloff unit.
