In Memiors of a Geisha, Sayuri (the main character) and her sister are sold to geisha houses as children because her mother is dying and her father is very old and cannot care for them. Sayuri then tries to run away, but breaks her arm and is punished by not being trained in geisha arts anymore and is made basically a slave to pay off her debts to the house (her schooling, room and board, etc.)
She is able to become a geisha because she has a chance meeting with the Chairman, who knows Mameha (and arranges for Mameha to convince Sayuri's house to let her become a geisha), another geisha who takes Sayuri under her wing and trains her to be a great geisha.
The bidding you are referring to could either be for the geisha's virginty or for the person to be the geisha's danna (which is the geisha's benefactor).
I've actually seen geisha costumes at Spencers and at Party City (I live in the Chicago area). Try searching online, there's a lot of stuff around. Check out these geisha books:
Geisha: A Life by Mineko Iwasaki
Autobiography of a Geisha by Sayo Masuda
Geisha of Gion by Mineko Iwasaki
Have fun!

The book, "Memoirs of a Geisha", explains a lot about the customs and traditions asscociated with being a geisha and Asian culture. I think the part you are referring to is the bidding for a geisha's virginity. Check on costume sites or other places, they shouldn't be hard to find since Halloween is just around the corner...

The bidding was for the geisha's virginity. I would suggest for you to read the book. It's much better than the movie. (^_^)

the movie was about a little girl who ends up at a geisha house and starts geisha school but tries to run aways. gets caught and has to be a servant to pay off her debut. They bid on the geisha so they can take their virginity and the geisha uses it to pay off their debut.

the lady who wrote the book was very upset at the movie; she said it didn't tell the important parts of her story at all.
