I live in an apartment complex with interior hallways, and the jerk in the next apartment SLAMS his door as loudly as possible. I have made him aware of this, and he does not care. On top of that, he yells at his low self-esteem girlfriend while they are in the hallway, and he's basically just an abusive loser.

I could go to the landlord and express my concerns, but I figure my neighbor would then go nuts and come after me.

Should I start slamming my door in return, or perhaps bouncing things off the adjoining wall? Blaring music maybe? I hate to get into eye-for-eye behaviors, but I'm stuck in my lease for the next 6 months.

I have a table fan in my bedroom because I don't like to hear noise in the neighbourhood while I'm trying to sleep. There are teenagers next door and I sleep with my window open and I don't want to complain about their parties so I turn the fan on. Even in the winter when people are using their snow blowers I turn the fan on and sleep right through it. In the summer kids play basketball on the street and if I don't turn the fan on, all I hear is plump plump plump of the ball on the pavement.

Anyway the fan blocks out everything and I never have to complain about anyone. Give it a try and you won't have any trouble with the neighbours.

As for the low self-esteemed girlfriend, only she can solve her problems so get the fan and you won't hear a thing.

Do not get into a "noise war" . You will only be miserable. He already knows you don't like the noise so you won't be giving him any big realization, you'll just be goading him to ratchet it up. This is a Very tough problem.Landlords are notoriously reluctant to get involved in noise-issues. And with most day-to-day noise issues there is little they Can do. I'm not being a wiseguy when I say what worked for me is prayer. I refrained from retaliating wih noise of my own and just kept praying. My neighbors have made BIG efforts to quiet down. And I Very Much respect them for that. Change is hard. ( I had never mentioned it to then either--they were not wildly execesssive in noise or anything like that. At this point I am very very glad that they are my neighbors.) The yelling at the girlfriend part makes it sound like a long shot that thsi dude is going to improve. But who knows. In any case pray_ The Lord is mighty.

You can always move. You have the same requirements living there as he does, yes you may go to the landlord with you CONCERN rather than a complaint, and go to them with at least half a solution, perhaps mention the guy could run a strip of foam around the inside of the door frame to stop the constant noise.
Do not retaliate with slamming your doors etc...thats not the way to live comfortably with your neighbour.
Good luck.

Bring the case to the attention of your landlord. Let him sort out the problems. If it persist, call 911 and let this silly fellow understand the message. Don't be afraid, everyone has the right. Not only him, being a tough guy is not a thing to be afraid of.

If you've already tried talking to him, then going to your landlord is the next best course of action. And if you're afraid of him, perhaps you should bring in the police as well.

Unfortunately you really can't control other people's behavior. Especially someone you don't really know and who isn't in your family. I would suggest moving or confronting your neighbor and telling him how you feel in a polite adult way.
