A desktop uses more power than a laptop generally speaking unless it's a weak computer that is running on minimal specifications while the laptop is extremely overclocked and whatnot.

A device must be heavier and more stable hence be bigger to have more power and still be safe. If a laptop uses as much power as a desktop, either the desktop is bad or the laptop is going to overheat.

As usual, it depends. A loaded laptop could draw more than a lighweight desktop, even though the box is much bigger. Processor varys considerably, some made just for laptops draw very little power. Dual processors don't use twice as power, but are right up there.

But in general laptops use less.
