Let's just say this, Eureka is to Dyson what Wal-Mart is to a Louis Vuitton store. There is a definite gap in quality and workmanship, as well as in long lasting durability between the two. I would definitely go with Dyson because they are not a company ran by shareholders, they are a company operated by engineers. Innovation is key to their success, as evident world wide in terms of sales and name brand recognition.

What basically sets Dyson apart from the rest of the lazy complacent vacuum cleaner market is it's technology. It's filtration system which uses high speed cyclones to separate dust and debris from the airstream (rather than bags and pleated filters that clog and lose suction), which results in no loss of suction, no matter how much debris and filth you vacuum up. In comparison, typical vacuums that use bags, or the bagless types that use pleated filters, lose suction instantly as they experience dust build-up on the surface of the filter or bag. Therefore, the more dust you pick up, the more suction you lose, plain and simple.

Now, I think Dyson is the way to go, but it is up to you to decide what model suits you best. They currently offer three full size models (with two more on the way). The first one in the DC07 upright. It was the first Dyson to be launched here in 2002, and it still is on sale today. It is your fairly basic model that starts at $400. The DC14 is nearly the same as the DC07, with the exception of a few upgrades. The filtration unit (called Root Cyclone) has been modified to provided even more efficient filtration. The cleaning wand instantly extends out of the top of the vacuum's handle, where as on the DC07, you would have to take the handle off, and pull out the wand and assemble it. It also features a suction channel at the very front of the floor nozzle which allows larger debris on the floor to be instantly sucked up, rather than being plowed around. The DC14 starts at $430

The DC15, which is the machine I current own, is almost the same as the DC14, with the exception of how it moves. Rather than rolling on wheels, the DC15 rolls on a large ball, which allows you to instantly move it through corners and curved areas without constant back and forth movements of a traditional wheeled upright. I should also note that the DC15 uses a direct motorized gear driven brush roll, which is better than the belt driven brush rolls used in the DC07 and DC14. These machines start out at $500. Now I must note that you should try the DC15, if you consider it, before you buy it. Some have felt that the DC15 felt too strange to move and preferred the DC14, while others enjoyed the flexible movement of the ball. I'll leave that up to you to decide.

Now, I feel you should know about the two new models that will be in stores in a couple of weeks. The first is the DC17. Basically a heavily modified DC14, it features a more aggressive brush roll more suitable for American carpets (The DC07 and DC14 were built for European carpets), with the brush roll being driven by a direct motorized gear drive system like the DC15. The DC17 will also feature a new filtration system called "Level 3 Root Cyclone", which is basically the same as the current Root Cyclone system, but with a third stage that recycles dust particles that bypass the cyclones back through the entire filtration process again, and again, and again, until it is all filtered out of the airstream.

And finally comes the DC18, or "Dyson Slim". This model is basically a thinner, slimmer, lighter weight version of the Dyson DC15. Like the DC15, it rolls on a ball (albeit, a much smaller ball), uses a direct gear driven motorized brush roll, and uses a similar Root Cyclone system with fewer cyclones (DC15 = 8 cyclones, DC18 = 6 cyclones). The DC18 will not get the Level 3 Root Cyclone system like the DC17. However, at 14 lbs, this will be the lightest weight, most maneuverable Dyson on the market, in comparison to its 20+ lb. counterparts. With the DC17 and DC18 launching here in within weeks, pricing has not been announced (expect that information to be announced on Friday the 13th), is has been estimated that the DC17 will go for around $450-$500, with the DC18 lightweight somewhere around $450. If I were you, I would consider only the DC15, DC17, or DC18. These three models are better refined than the earlier DC07 and DC14 models, and feature the highly efficient gear driven brush rolls (which are MUCH BETTER than the belt drive clutch units in the DC07 and DC14!!) You can find information on the DC15 at www.dyson.com, as well as information on the DC18 at www.dyson.co.uk (it has been launched in the UK, but will be in the US soon. More information on the DC17 will be available this Friday on the American Dyson site as well. I hope this helps.

We bought a Dyson DC14 The Animal (Purple one) last year, we've had scores of vacuums over the years and not one could compare to our 'Animal',, we have 2 dogs and 2 cats and an active household to clean up after and I've never seen a cleaner pick up the hair and everything half as well as the Dyson. We got ours off ebay and wound up paying only $385 for ours brand new, it's actually been a dream to use, and the attachments are all very easily used. I love it.

Don't buy until you have investigated Miele (German designed and manufactured). Both canister and upright available. Super quiet yet powerful motor. Many thoughtful features. Relatively expensive, but less so than Dyson. Very durable, so cost amortized over machine life makes it a fantastic value. Check Consumer Reports online (if you are a member...cost about $15/yr) or research the mags at your local library.

A Dyson is your best bet because of the vortex circulation that it uses to suck up the dirt. It will never lose suction power as it goes along your floor. If price is no object then definitely choose the Dyson.

I got a dyson and I love it. My carpet looks like new.
And it was really bad with cat hair. Used my old vacumn and it died on me. Thought the rug was clean. Got the dyson and it took 3 or 4 baskets of stuff out of the rug. My carpet was worse than I thought.

I have a Dyson and love it, it is easy to clean and does a great job... also it has a really long plug cord so I don't have to keep switching it from outlet to outlet.
