John lives on the 20th floor of an appartment block. He works long hours in a bakery across the road and six doors down to the left. Every morning on his way to work he would catch the elevator all the way from the 20th floor down to the entrance/exit on the ground floor. However, when he returns he would get off on the 8th floor and walk up to the 20th via the stairs.

Why doesn't he catch the elevator all the way up to his home on the 20th floor?

He's too short to push the button for the 20th floor

We're going to presume that John's not dumb as a doornail.

So even if he's short, I'm sure could use a stick or one of the loaves of bread to press 20 should he choose to do so. So that's definitely not it.

Since he could walk from ground or from 8, exercise isn't the reason, especially since he works long hours at the bakery. Though maybe he figured out that's the most he can walk w/o breaking a sweat!

But if it's not one of those, there must be some incentive to get off at 8. Either he's got a friend there, or a nice painting he passes. Perhaps, he should consider moving to 8!

Maybe rather thank stalking it time to say hello. Maybe rather than going to the computer world to find out the answer its time to go to the elevator and make a new friend. It seems you've been around this person enough to know where he lives and works and his odd habits, maybe its time to join in and find out for yourself. It cant be that bad. Worst case you might end up walking up to the 20th floor with him.

Maybe he is wanting a little exercise but doesn't want to start with walking all 20 floors.

He's either too short to reach all the buttons on the elevator or he's using the steps as his personal stairmaster for exercise!

Because with his busy schedule he has no time to exercise and thinks that it would be better for his health to jog up the rest of the stairs on his way home?

We can only guess,,,,, fear of elevators above that floor, wants more exercise, etc.... The only way to really know, is to ask him.
