depends on the type of wood, ( spruce, pine, hem-fur.....) also depends on the application......is it used as a stud, a header, a joist.........

There are charts that you can use, but they are broken down by wood species and by the grade. The more knots a board has, the weaker it is. Try going to a local building material supplier. The can get graded lumber structural charts, I have had some guy at stock building supply look these up for me before. It's a free service.
