Often in fantasy novels, the name also has something to do with what the character does or is from. Think about where Joc is from and what he does, and something should come clear.

There's always baby name books. They have origins and meanings in them. Try those. Most of my characters come from there. Or there's this book called, "Names and The Meaning Behind Them". I think you can pick it up at B. Dalton, Barnes & Noble, or Walden Books. It gives character traits for names, how they've been used through history, and even nicknames or respellings (Caitlin, Katelynn) that kind of thing. Good luck.

Is Joc short for a sports person... in your book. A nickname of sorts. If so you could give him a simple first name like Anthony or Gregory. And a harder last name like Dalgliesh or something.
That way you can still call him by his nickname to his friends.. and get only his family or close friend to call him a short version of his first name

Hope this helps

If you are writing fantasy, you can make up any combination of letters and say that it means something/anything. If you are writing something set in a known world or an urban fantasy you can go out on the net and look up names from around the world, or you can have the name be a nickname for something he does or is.
