How do I change the manner in which my computer downloads? It appears that it is goes to the desktop, and that isn't necessarily what I want. I think that is why I am having so much difficulty downloading programs - instant messanger, music, etc. I have changed settings (SSL, which I have never heard of), and I am still having problems. Is there something I am missing? The control panel has been my nemesis for two days!

Usually the download manager is in the tool menu in your browser. If you open the download manager you should be able to set preferences on where files should go when you download, or have it ask you every time where to send the file.

I created a folder in My Documents for "Downloads."

After clicking whatever it is you want to download, you will get an option to run or save.
Select save.
You should indicate where to save.
In the "file in" box -- cl the down arrow to display "Downloads" (the folder you created to save downloads)
On the lower part of the window, for filename, keep the name that displays but cursor immediately to the left of the first character and type a very brief description.
For Filetype: click the down-arrow until the correct extension is showing -- jpg / exe / whatever.

To install the program, I make a copy and paste it on the desktop. (This way you keep a copy of the program in My Documents.)
Open/execute it from the desktop (with no other programs open).
After it is finished setting up, and you restart, you can delete it from the desktop.

When you download something in IE, it should let you chose the destination. In firefox, just go to Options then Downloads and browse the location of where you want it to download.
