the average size for a song is what 4 MB once it hits windows (wma format) so lets say 12 songs per disc at a rate of 4.5mb per song so thats 54 mb per cd *500=27000mb=27 gb so your standard 30gb hard drive should suffice.
but if you save it to the hard drive at uncompressed format. then its about 15mb per song *12 ....90gb ..but thats just a guesstimate. actually if you put in an audio cd, right click and go to its properties you can get the disk size. add a few MB and *500.
1000Mb=1Gb

Let's say that each CD is one hour long. That's 500*60 = 30000 mins.
Now, let's say you rip at 128kbps (CD quality using AAC or WMA, near CD quality when using MP3), that uses 960KB per minute.
960*30000 = 28800000KB of data, or 27.5GB of data.
This is an over-estimate since most albums will be less than an hour, but this gives you can idea of the space you will need.

Depends greatly on what sound quality you rip at.
At 128kbps, look at about 70mb per cd, or 35gb for 500 cds
at 256, double that
and so on...
