The .com domain I want is currently taken. I found that it doesn't expire for another year... I need a website in the meantime.
The domain is available with a .net extension... So my question is, in your opinion, would it be more effective to get a.net domain or a similar .com with an added word?
Example: www.johnsmith.net OR www.justjohnsmith.com

Most people, if they remember your site name, will automatically type .com. They may remember it was .net after they don't see what they were expecting. I would try to do .com. You can use dashes and even something like johnsmithonline.com or johnsmith4u.com. If you go to http://www.nameboy.com/, it will let you put in up to 2 words and give you suggestions. It will let you know what is available. Check with whois.net and make sure it is available because sometimes their records aren't completely accurate.
Don't bother waiting for the name to expire. I find that people aren't willing to give up their .coms even if they aren't using them. You can find out their registration info and contact the owner but once they see someone has interest in it, they are more likely to want to hold on to it or sell it at a high price.

Be your own self. Get a .com, because no one remembers the .net, so people will end up going to the page that already has your desired domain name.

If it were an e-commerce website I would try to stick with .com, but if it is a personal page, use your actual name with the .net.
