It would be worth NOT to visit Romania. There are a lot of beautiful places to see and many things to do. There are, of course, poor and uneducated people, but.........Come and we'll talk later !

The Carpathians are breath taking with all its monstaries, ski resorts and little villages. The Black Sea coast is slowly being renovated but the culture makes up for it. Bucuresti (Bucharest) has a very diverse mixture of arctitecture as its capital has been the crossroads of thousands of years of human migration. I dont expect entry into the EU to suddenly change their economy, at least not for a few more years, so for the moment Romania is a bargain if one is looking for a new adventure. The food and culture are very unique and well worth it. Contrary to western media Romania is not a 3rd world nation and they are making huge strides towards achieving expected standards.

If you have never been to Eastern Europe, it will definitely give you a good feel for it. Bucharest itself is not exactly a beautiful city. It's quite dirty, but still cheap. However, Romania does offer some quite pristene natural and folklore items.. you can visit castles, mountains/skiing, Transylvanian old villages etc. Just be careful for tourist traps.
All depends what you are looking for.

I think yes, you will see definetly 2 worlds: villages and and small quite poor economically but full of traditions, the food is better than anywhere else in the world, so eat in traditionally restaurants, people are extremly friendly but do not get into into traps, Bucharest is a mixture of at least 3 times (old french style buildings, ceusasescu blocks of flats, a lot of new buildings and modern offices)

Actually I'm visiting Transylvania now myself and it's fantastic. The landscapes, the castles, everything. And by the way, there are no suppressed Hungarians here, everyone is civilized... a little too poor maybe, but nice. And the food is... whoa! You should definitely find a way to come here before they join E.U. and the prices will explode...
