I have to disagree with what I've just read about France having difficulties because of the 30 hour week. There are examples of other european countries like Denmark who have applied the same policy and have proven that people that have a better balance between work and home have better results than the overworked employee of american companies like WalMart which make you a complete slave and then make you believe that stress is good. Actually, USA is better in economics than countries like France, but French people have a quality of life that completely wins over America, they are not focused and how big is your house or which car do you have (which actually leads you to materialism and to forget what life is all about) they take more importance on dinners with the family, developing your skills and getting on your hobbies, studying part time for an extra degree that will enhance your knowledge and just sitting on a bench enjoying a coffee with a croissant, etc...

I'm having a little trouble following your question but if it's why don't the U.S. and Canada have laws that require the shorter work weeks and longer vacations like they have in Continental Europe.

The main answer is freedom. We believe you and your employer should decide how many hours you will work not the government. The manditory vacations and short work weeks in Europe are a key factor in their lack of productivity and unemployment rates. France as I understand it has already figured out the 30 hour work week is killing their economy and have done away with it.
