If you enjoy sharing a glass of a nice red wine with friends and family, you may be working on reducing your cholesterol while you're relaxing. Scientists at the University of California, Davis, think that a group of chemicals in red wine, called saponins, are linked to the ability to lower cholesterol. Red wines contain about the same amount of resveratrol and saponin. Resveratrol is thought to block cholesterol oxidation by its antioxidant action and saponins are believed to work by binding to and preventing the absorption of cholesterol.
It now seems clear that regular consumption of up to 1-2 drinks a day (1 standard drink is approximately equal to 5 oz, or 125 ml, of 13% wine) does reduce mortality, due to 10%?40% lower risk of coronary heart disease, for those over the age of 35 or so.recent studies show that only red wine reduces the risk of contracting several types of cancer where beer and other alcoholic beverages show no change. Dr. Sinclair of Harvard University and others claim that resveratrol is the active molecule responsible for the significant difference in lowering cancer risks and that the required amounts are only found in red wine. Trace amounts of resveratrol exist in grapes, white and red wine and peanuts.

Allright, firstly, all women and kids (less than 16) get off this board. This is men's health.
Secondly, the French drink red wine and white wine with every meal. Moderate amounts. It has been shown that alcohol dehydrogenase (the enzyme breaking down alcohol in the blood until transported to the liver) is able to function fine at a 1000 ppm. in most people. Therefore if you drink red wine in okay amounts, you'll be just fine.

one glass a day can be healthy for you.. but it only applies to red wines because of the natural antioxidents that are in there.. other kinds dont have the same.
