The main reason why I own a DS isn't because of the Mario type games it's because Nintendo is becoming the innovator. You take away all of the good and bad reasons why you should buy a DS or a PSP, including all of the factors you want listed above we are then listed asked if it's worth buying in the first place.
A DS has a better price tag, durrablity and the games are more funner. People will argue that Nintendo is for kids and you shouldn't buy it because it's from that company. Ever since I got my hands on some thier recent flagship titles I've been having tons of fun for literly hours on end and forgot how long I was playing the games.
The Nintendo WiFi allows players to challenge someone online across the world.. Nintendo also has created 'DS Download Stations' worldwide which allows gamers a chance to download free demos at various store locations. Somehow I've learned that either system of which you plan to purchace depends upon what's your preference in video games. No matter of what happens just have fun with the console you choose to have.

what you read is somewhat true. the n64 did not have 2 screens, and the n64 did not have a touch screen.
graphics are far better for the PSP. i will give you that. but lately, all the people i know that have PSPs are pissed off because there isnt really much of a game library. i love my DS. i also have a PSP. i liked katamari for the PSP, but i have to admit i havent played much else with it. the PSP is not very durable at all. the DS lite and DS are both very durable. you do not risk scratching the screens since the two close up and stay shut while not being played. we make sure and put a LCD film designed to take the scraches instead of the screen, and replace the clear film once about every month or do. even dust scraches the screen if left unprotected on the PSP. both are very portable.
another thing you might want to consider is how long they both take to charge, and the battery life of both. the PSP takes about 15 minutes to charge with the wall adapter, and the DS takes about an hour to charge. both have about 6 to 8 hours of battery life, although some games for the PSP overclock the processor, and you can get as little as 3 hours of game play out of a full battery with a game such as Grand Theft Auto.
overall, the PSP has more adult associated games, and the DS is more designed for children as most nintendo systems do(although i'm 24, and i absolutely love my DS).
recently, a game came out in germany for the DS, that taught you how to speak english. i think it was called "wonderfull" in german. i'm hopeing the DS will put out out a game in america to teach us japanese. however, nintendo has not put out any further information concerning this matter.
concerning price, PSP has just dropped their price to better compete with the DS, (however, most places are still selling it for $199) as sony realizes there are more games for the DS, and many agree the DS a better system. the origonal DS, (little bigger than the lite) can be purchesed cheaper in many stores, as the DS lite is out now, and is around $129.

DS is highly inovative in its gameplay
PSP is exactly like a PS2 except the screen is really small.
So if I didn't want games that are available on a different console I already have, I'd go with the DS.
But if you don't have a PS2, then PSP might be good.
My overall vote is the DS.

DS:
Pros:
-the classic games (mario,zelda,etc.)
-improve hadwriting
-upcoming internet browser
Cons:
-the 2nd screen CAN get scratched
-only plays games and chat (for now)
PSP:
Pros:
-MP3
-Can see movies
-Play games
-Go on internet (need wi-fi)
-Store pictures
-customizable (very as in change background)
-Beautiful LCD screen
-(loaction free) I think you are able to watch TV.
Cons:
-If you have a sib. easy to break (cut some slack, my brother broke it and he was 6 that time)
-to download verisons can be different if you are using an international model (1000,1006,etc. I have the 1000)
i am not listing the battery life for any of them since I do not remember. Also they are all rechargeable (duh)
as for the N64: library is simular, but no double screens, grahpics I think are the same, and also the contolrs, but N64 has no touch screen
PS2 vs PSP: PS2 has more games, but i tink controls are the same
