It is a faulty reverse light switch. I had the same thing on a 1996 328. The switch is located on the side of the gear box and is easy to access with the front of the car supported on axle stands. On RHD cars it is on the drivers side. The switch simply scews out and then unplugs from the wiring. Fitting is as simple as removal and a new switch will only set you back a few £ (or $)

open up the bonnett (hood) and look inside , get a friend to move the gear lever and put the car into reverse , from this you will see where the mechanism is . there should be a switch visible attached to the mechanism , some times they are just corroded and cleaning up with some sand paper will do the job , other wise remove the 2 wires and put them together (remember to have the igition switch on) , if the lights work , replace the switch

could be a bad earth connection, personally before you start messing with the wrong things you should check the simple things ie, wiring, connectors from the socket to the bulb etc, yes there is a reverse sensor and NO ITS NOT IN THE GEARBOX!!! im not 100% on where it is actually located but i no its somewhere around the gear shifter, its not inside the gearboxc atall! so dont fiddle with it lol, i no i havent been a great help but try the simple things first!!! hope u sort your problem soon :D

The backup light switch should be on the side of the gearbox towards the top, near where the shift linkage goes in.

Short the two wires together and the light should come on. If they do, you have a bad switch. If not, you have a wiring problem.

The problem is most likely the reverse switch. You didn't state whether you have and automatic or standard transmission. You also have to give the make and model of the car since the switch is located in different locations on different makes of cars.
