Hi Im having trouble figuring out how to get the answer 103/5 or 20.6 for this problem....

1/3(y+4)+5 = 1/4(3y -1) -2

I thought I had to multiply 12 all the way through...but maybe Im not doing that right? Please help me.

Multiplying through by 12 will get rid of the fractions. YOu get

4(y+4)+60 = 3(3y-1)-24.

Distribute:

4y+16+60 = 9y-3-24

Collect like terms on opposite sides:

16+60+3+24 = 9y-4y

Combine like terms:

103 = 5y

So y=103/5.

First, you'll have to multiply the right side by 3. Then, you'll multiply the left side by 4. This will cancel out both of your fractions.

expand both sides, and then move all of the (y)s to one side, and the numbers to the other.
