I recently adopted a severely overweight guinea pig. She does not like to go on walks or do any physical activity. She is a cage with another guinea that is young and eats a lot (as she needs to), so food control is...well...sort of a problem.

I wondered if cavies could swim - it would be easier on Penny's joints. I've heard the expression "you look like a drowned rat" and so I didn't know if rodents could swim or not.

Piggies can swim but you do not have to swim her. Take her out and let her roam. If she is severely over weight, the more floor time she has out on the floor the better. Put her out on the floor with her friend. they swim but not enough to lose any weight, and if she is a heavy as you say she is she will not swim for long, we had piggies come in so large they looked like a foot ball, most of the time this comes from to small of a cage, or feeding food high in starch and sugar, if you grain them once a day and are providing timothy hay for them she will lose the extra she is carrying, just keep in mind floor time is a must,

I have 2 guinea pigs and I fill the bath tub with a couple inches of water and they love to swim. I do put something in there like a box or something just so they can get out of the water if they would like but they do both swim.

If you're talking about filling up a bath tub or filling up a sink then NO guinea pigs can NOT swim. I've had 2 guinea pigs, one of them I still have now. If you're going to let them swim you have to hold them, they can't keep themselves up above water like us. I have my guinea pig in water every weekend to giver her bath, as my other guinea pig had a bath every weekend also. They can't swim, period lol.

cavies probably can swim if the water isnt too deep.
guinea pigs generally dont like/dont do physical activity and they're usually on the chubby side.
i've had 2 guinea pigs. They both hated water. it was especially hard whenever i bathed them. it's like torture to them. dont do it.
an exercise tip is to suspend food in higher places so guinea pig has to stretch for it.
