The internet is the newest "mass medium" - it is a way for someone to broadcast a message to millions - or billions - of people around the world. It (as you're finding out now) is a great forum for finding answers to questions.

The internet was started as ARPANet in 1969 by the Department of Defense so that their information (plans, research, etc.) could withstand a war. If one site was bombed/destroyed, the data would be on other computers in other military installations and universities across the U.S. Slowly, other countries joined the network, the National Science Foundation took it over, and Al Gore created it. (hahaha kidding)

There are many bad sites on the Internet - porn, and Wikipedia are two of them. Wikipedia because many people think they are getting credible information, but it can be posted by any Joe Schmo out there. My friend Kevin and my husband and I created an entry about the origin "yadda yadda yadda" (check it out).Universities post great information on sites, and we can trust that. (Basically, for information research, steer clear of .com or .net and stick with .gov or .edu or .k12.__(2 letter state abbreviation).us)

But, that being said, there are also great things that the Internet has. Check out flickr.com - great pictures, sort of "grassroots journalism" happens (the bombings in London last summer - some of the first pictures the media caught hold of came from cell phone cameras' pics that were posted on flickr!)

Hope that helped. :) ...and besides, you can keep tabs on the latest celebrity gossip rather fast!! ha ha

It's not a 'should' or 'should not' concept. It's purely based on how somebody finds it useful. In our society, it's common to have the internet for entertainment, but at the same time people have jobs and careers on the internet as well. I think the internet is great, but nobody actually 'needs' it. It's just a good way to access information. And hey, it's better than TV.

World Wide Web. The World Wide Web is not a physical place, not a set of files, nor even a network of computers.
Reasons why people use the Internet
* To find general information about a subject
The Web is like a huge encyclopedia of information - in some ways it's even better. The volume of information you'll find on the Web is amazing. For every topic that you've ever wondered about, there's bound to be someone who's written a Web page about it. The Web offers many different perspectives on a single topic.
To access information not easily available elsewhere
One of the great things about the Web is that it puts information into your hands that you might otherwise have to pay for or find out by less convenient means.
# To meet people
The Web is generally a very friendly place. People love getting email from strangers, and friendships are quick to form from casual correspondence. The "impersonal" aspect of email tends to encourage people to reveal surprisingly personal things about themselves. When you know you will never have to meet someone face-to-face, you may find it easier to tell them your darkest secrets. Cyber-friendships have often developed into real life ones too. Many people have even found love on the Net, and have gone on to marry their cyber-partner.

# To discuss their interests with like-minded people
Did you think you were alone in your obsession with a singer, TV programme, author, hobby? Chances are there's and Internet group for people like you, discussing every little detail of your obsession right now.

# There's no doubt that the Internet is a fun place to be. There's plenty to keep you occupied on a rainy day.

# To learn
Online distance education courses can give you an opportunity to gain a qualification over the Internet.

# To read the news

# To buy things
The security of on-line shopping is still questionable, but as long as you are dealing with a reputable company or Web Site the risks are minimal.

What makes the www unique is the striking appearance of the information when it gets to your computer. In addition to text, the web presents color, images, sounds and video. This, combined with its ease of use, makes the web the most popular aspect of the Internet for a large majority of users.
Research, Personal web sites , On line shopping , Shareware

Threaded Conference . On-Line Chat Rooms (Synchronous , Conversations/reaction)

Multi-User Dummies (M.U.D.s). Text-based VR ; Role playing games ; Same time , Streamed Broadcast (receiving, sending audio and video)
Internet telephone and video telephone.

Men and women found the Internet equally useful for doing their jobs and for shopping; the report said about a third of male and female respondents said the Internet has improved that "a lot." Women found the Internet most useful for finding healthcare information than men did, while more men than women said the Internet improved their personal pursuits.

What is there that has not to benefit?

Society has become more connected. Research is easier. Communicating has become cheaper (remember 50 cent a minute long distance charges?), entertainment and music is easier to listen and store.

There is a not s single aspect of life that has not benefited from use of the internet.

Even the Taliban and al-Queda use it. (sadly)
