because it looks like your on a call when you do that and if you are at work you should not look like you are on the phone unless it is for work purposes

Well its sort of like wearing a hat indoors, its common courtesy to take off your hat when you enter a building, much less an office environment. People tend to see if you don't take off your hat, in this case your earpiece, means your lazy and don't really care about being courteous. Its like wearing a big cowboy hat to a ball game, the people may have a hard time seeing with the hat in front of them, so just take it off, it's not like it takes you a long time to put it back on.

It depends on the context of where you were and the purpose of the phone.

If its your private cell phone, not for work-related calls, then it should only be in your ear when your talking on it, regardless of where you are in the whole office (this assumes that your company allows private cell phone calls while 'on the clock').

If it is a phone for work-related calls:
If you were outside of your work area (cubicle, private office, etc), then you should not be wearing it if you're not talking on it.

If you were in your private work area, and its a work-related phone, then I would see no problem keeping it in your ear.

But, the boss signs your paycheck, so as long as he didn't do something illegal or ask you to do something unsafe, you do what he says.

well i think that earpieces are kinda confusing, becuz u dont know if the person is talking on the phone, or just crazy. but i dont see how it would be 'disrespectful'. whatever bosses suck.

well when you are at work you are on his time and it goes to say that what ever he asks of you (except the obvious sexual solicitations) you must do. if he does not want you to wear your personal phone all day take it off, otherwise find another job that will let you.
