I saw a demo. on the news, advicing kids not to drop a menthos into diet soda. A big dangerous explosion is caused by the reaction, too much pressure.

it releases all the carbon dioxide in the diet coke and fizzes violently... the cause of this is in Diet coke: Aspartame, caffeine, and carbon dioxide.
The cause in Mentos:Gum arabic, and a process called nucleation. This is where the almost microscopic holes in the mentos gather the CO2 and then rapidly release it.
p.s. you don't have to shake it or anything... just drop em in. have fun!

If you do it right and shake it up enough it will take off like a rocket. Make sure that you shake it enough and that you get the cap on quickly before you start shaking it. If you do not shake it enough you will end up with a dud.

I remember that the answer lies in http://www.i-am-bored.com
I just checked and the video is on pg.9 today. It won't stay there for long though, there is more than just mentos in diet soda in the video.
