inferior because they 'don't get it'? A light going on and off, a glass of water on a shelf, dirty bed clothes. I though art was about creativity and depth of the soul. This is just cack! Agree?

No, I don't agree. For starters, it's free so it can't be a rip-off in the sense that I think you mean. I'm sorry for you if looking at perplexing stuff makes you feel inferior. Hopefully you'll get over that and learn to love yourself a bit more. I'm not trying to be rude by the way, I really do care. You are equal to everybody, please try to appreciate this. Creativity can be just about anything, including stuff that nobody else thinks is creativity! The Tate Modern is great and long may it continue to display mad weird things to the people of the world.

Probably.

Fortunately there are lots of other, excellent collections you can visit in London:

1. The Wallace Collection
2. The National Gallery
3. The Courtauld
4. The V and A.
5. Dulwich Picture Gallery
6. The British Museum.
7. The Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood House
8. Sir John Soanes Museum

Enjoy yourself. There´s no arguing matters of taste.

I think you're confusing Tate Modern with the modern art itself. Certainly, the value of concept behind some pieces of modern art is often debatable. However Tate Modern is not a rip off. Firstly - it is for free, apart from special exhibition. Secondly, the works of art are presented with very good descriptions. So it is pretty easy to understand the works. It is left to you to agree or disagree with their merit. If you do not like something there it is rather a question of your personal negative opinion of the piece, which you are absolutely entitled to have, and not of you "not getting it". I personally love it, even though I find some works, like the ones for example by Tracy Emin, totally repulsive and not a piece of art at all.

A.

When did you last visit Tate Modern, helen? They have a wide variety of art, often traditional paintings and occasioanally Turner Prize nominees or the more wacky modern stuff. Something for everyone, though personally I think they 'dumb down' to give their exhibitions wider appeal.

Like others have said, the majority of Tate Modern is free. It is an amazing building, designed originally by Gilbert-Scott (who designed the British red telephone box) and refurbished by the great Swiss architects, Herzog and DeMeuron. Or maybe you would prefer is was demolished and replaced by a commercial office block, or yuppie housing?

It can't be a rip-off if you're not paying to get in. Tracy Emin's My Bed is not my cup of tea either but it still challenge to me how to think of art in a way. i guess that i will never figure it out the meaning of a glass of water on a shelf but again it's ART that you don't have to understand everything.

First off..its free, how can it be a rip off ? while i wouldnt admit to understanding everything there i still think its a amazing place, just trying to work out what the artist is trying to achieve is part of the experience. and surely no matter what you think of the end product you cant deny that its creative.
what they have done with the building is nothing short of outstanding as well..i might suggest you dont visit the art exibition at battersea power station at the moment, its prob even less your cup of tea.

Not all of the art in there is 'cack' and as a previous poster said- it's captured your imagination and made you think.

ha..ha..I see what you mean.
However just like we have different tastes in clothes, we also have different taste in art. What you saw there simply didn't impress you but did many others. I am sure it was not the Artist's intention to make you feel inferior but rather to provoke a reaction in you which they succeeded.

Go and enjoy something else like the National Portrait Gallery which is also "free admission"
(I sense that is your idea of 'Art')

I can't help thinking that caliing this Tate Modern thing 'art' is nothing more thna blatant affrontery.

Obviously, some jumped-up 'art expert' will pounce on this and laugh in my face, but still, at least I see fascination in things other than some randomly-arranged blocks.
