Sometimes. It really depends on the question and how it is asked. I have seen some very lively, intelligent and informative discusions on here... and even all one one questions too.

I think so. I go into the religion section sometimes and the people there are pretty respectful of each others views. There's no reason we can't be here -politics is certainly no more sensitive of a subject than faith. And a few of the askers in this section are really receptive to differing responses. It doesn't take long to learn.

Unfortunately, that entirely depends on the quality of the participants, and debate is subject to the Laws of the Lowest Common Denominator.

It could if we had civil and knowledgable people doing the debating. What that means is that the answer to your question is a loud NO!!!

It CAN and SHOULD. It's just someone always has to take it elsewhere. It can be a person from any side with any view .
