the answer that doug wrote is wrong, the sides don't have to be the same length, nor do the angles have to be equal, for the shape to be an octagon. If it is a 2D shape with 8 sides, it is an octagon. If all sides are the same length, and all angles are the same size, then it is a regular octagon. :)
