I would recommend applying a fall fertilizer to promote healthy root growth throughout the winter. Also you might consider aeration this fall as well as adding a high-nitrogen fertilizer such as Urea this winter. When next spring comes around you will have a lusher greener lawn.

In regards to your weed problem, it is probably best to take care of next year. As the top of the grass starts to go dormant for this season, response to contact weed killers diminishes. I would recommend using a pre-emergent herbicide next spring around Easter to prevent crabgrass and other weed-seed germination and then a weed and feed next memorial day to take care of any dandelions or other non wanted lawn weeds.

First do not leave the leaves sitting on your grass for the winter,rake them up.If you have a composter all the better. You should apply fertilizer that says Fall on it. When Spring comes do not walk or rake the grass until it is dry.A lot of walking etc. compacts the soil which you don't want. As soon as the weeds start to emerge you can either dig them out or put a weed and feed on them. This also fertilizes the soil and kills the weeds. Or you could just put compost on top of the soil and this would fertilize the soil also. It is hard to control the weeds once they get their roots going, so you need to decide weed killer or dig them up. Then you will need to re seed with grass seed. There are grass seed for shaded areas or for sunny areas. Once the seed is down you have to keep it moist. I would have a hose system set up so as soon as you wake in the morning turn it on until it is moist not running down the street.Turn it off on way to work.And as soon as you get home turn the hose on again. Do this for 5-7 days and you will see a green haze...that's your grass. Just make sure it gets about 1 inch of water a week.

Look for a weed and feed that is for fall treatment. If you can't find one just wait until it gets cold, almost freezing and spread a good seed for your climate by hand or spreader and then wait and feed in the spring. The grass will be dormant but will be strionger in the spring when it comes up. You can spread the seed and the weed and feed if the package reccomends it but it would be just as good to plant the seed this fall and feed in spring. You can also spread more seed in spring if it needs it.

NPK:
N=NITROGEN
P=POSPHATE
K= POTASSIUM
Get a fertilizer with NPK in the fertilizer then fertilize and make sure you water once a day for seven days and when you mow only take 1/3 of the leaf blade off if you take anymore off the grass blade will have problems with photosynesis which basically means it wiil ave trouble growing.................

YOU COULD APPLY WEED AND FEED FRTLIZER AND IN THE SPRING PUT LIME ON IT FOLLOWED BY A LIGHT APLICATION OF 13-13-13 RAINBOW FERTLIZER. THIS MAKES GRASS GROW BETTER THAN ANYTHING I HAVE USED.
