It depends on the couple. If a guy wants to surprise her with a proposal, then he will choose the ring. If they decide as a couple to get married and he doesn't have the ring yet, then they should pick one out together.

It depends. If they talk about getting married and decide to do so, then they should go to a jeweler and she should pick out the ring. But if he proposes, he should buy a ring himself. I guess in some situations, he can propose and they go pick a ring together. It really depends on the people and what they want.

If the guy is clueless, then here is a good idea, and several of my friends have done this.
The guy takes the girl to the jewellers, but then gets her to pick SEVERAL rings, then leaves it as a surprise as to which ring he will get her.
(And if he's good, he's have a good idea of what ring she wants the *most*, and get it, even if it's expensive. And if he's really good, he'll *act* like he can't get it, say it's too expensive or something, then surprise her and get it anyway.)

Its up to the couple, sometimes men are hopeless at choosing things, so the couple do it together, or the man picks out the ring with confidence to surprise the gf, either way its nice........so good luck and god bless

i think it adds to the surprise of the proposal.. my husband surprised me with the most beautiful ring, i had ever seen, how could i turn that down, 3 crts of diamonds!!
if u have already talked about getting engaged sometimes the proposal is choosing the ring together...
congratulations x x

My husband proposed to me without a ring then when he had the money we went to the store and he let me pick out the ring. There's nothing wrong with that.

Guess it depends. The men that have been in my life have 0 taste in jewlery. As long as the woman is respectful of the mans budget he may like an imput. I saved my man tons coz I prefered delicate and simple while he was looking at gaudy.

it is always a nice surprise to have the groom pick the engagement ring. But.. it is more practical to have the bride and groom go shopping together so he gets an idea of what to pick within his badget and what she likes.

I wouldn't think so, the guy should really try and find all the infomation covertly, because else it will spoil all attempts of proposing being a surprise or romantic
