I've heard that you should install Windows first, THEN install Linux. Windows likes to take control of everything, so don't install Windows second.
Therefore, install Windows first, then install Linux; when you install Linux, if you have a good distribution, it should ask you where you want to install it, whether you want dual-boot, etc.
Are you absolutely sure you want to dual boot, though? If you just want to "try out" Ubuntu for a while, you should get VMWare, it simulates a computer, and you can download a pre-built simulation of a PC with a fresh Ubuntu installation. Just a thought. :)
