Its a mixture of some images being displayed while others are just a lilttle red cross. Cant see anything that invites me to download images. On some web pages there are mixtures of pictures and 'red crosses'. I assume it must be a setting in Internet Explorer.. can anyone advise what I need to change?

You problem is very common wth IE...you can drive yourself nuts trying to figure out which settings are causing this.
Download Firefox & use that instead of Internet Explorer (You dont need to get rid of Internet Explorer & you can still use it at will)...but I bet you will hardly ever use it again.
You won't get the problems you mention if you use mozilla firefox browser...:-)

If only some images every once in a while are coming up with a 'little red x' then it is the fault of the site host, with a typo in the picture code or a bad link. If most of your pictures, or pictures on major sites like yahoo or ebay are coming up blank, then make sure all of your internet settings don't block images, and that your windows firewall is either off or more lenient to your internet priviledges. Sometimes you need quicktime to see flash images, so make sure you have that installed. It is free on the quicktime webpage- so its worth installing. Hope this helped!

Mixtures of pics and crosses would mean that your browser is fine, but the site has troubles - either the links to the pics are broken, the target is missing, or else the data did not get to the browser for some reason. Often, clicking on the Refresh button helps complete the download of the webpage. Otherwise, it is the site, not the browser.

If its grey were the picture should be and a red box with a white cross in is in the corner it means the image has been removed.

You can't view pictures which have red crosses in the corners of white squares....something about the publishers of the pictures not allowing it.
