Get a BUMBO seat. It is the greatest thing I have ever owned for my babies! You can find them easily brand new on Ebay - I don't know what stores carry them. But it is definitely worth your time to hop on Ebay and read about them. You can't imagine how useful they are. I bought one for mine because it was the new big thing after Oprah featured them, and I was curious - I ended up buying two because I wanted one handy both upstairs and downstairs. Greatest invention ever!

My mom got me a baby book with customized pages (for a boy or girl if you know what they're having), that prompts you to write down EVERYTHING you want to remember. Its from Hallmark though everyone makes one now days. My aunt got me a photo frame/album that was engravable with a certificate to get the engraving done.
More useful things I couldnt live without include... a pack & play (gets better as the baby gets older, too!); a stroller; an infant front/back pack carrier (or a sling, for when the baby is really young); a swing or bouncer chair; a high chair. Or a nice diaper bag--they make really stylish ones now!
What you could do is a big care package. Like a massage or manicure gift certificate for the moms (or even just some nice shower gels and candles); and some diapers, Desitin, baby wash, and toys for the baby. Or some foot pajamas for the baby and some cool clothes or accessories for the mommy. Or how about matching bath robes and slippers for mommy and baby?

a really great and stylish diaper bag... Burberry has a great one. I didn't like the new Coach one though.
You can put together a basket with all nursery essentials like diapers, wipes, desitin and baby powder. Then add a monitor and your all set. They can use the basket in the nursery on the changing table to hold all the stuff too. This gift works well for the mom who has a child already, because she probably already has everything else.
For the new moms, chances are they don't have anything so you can use the same idea as above but put it all in the diaper bag. Or just look at her registry and pick a gift from there.
Good luck.

I don't know how much you want to spend but I do know baby/mom style...Here are some great places to look up online I don't know all of the websites but I'm sure they will come up if you just type the name: babyjak (the blankets are awesome and they don't grow out of them in a month) little giraffe ( blankets and robes for mom and baby) fleurville (diaper bags and little totes) oilily (really expensive mom and baby girl outfits) sallyspicer (totes and diaperbags) blabla (crocheted stuffed animals and hats) That should give you some ideas. Remember at baby showers presentation is the key. I would use a plain wrapping papper and a few different colors of nice ribbon.

I would get baby something small like a blanket with there name on it or a item of clothing. And I would get each new mom a gift certificate for a spa treatment or a manicure and pedicure. All the focus is on the baby while the mother is pregnant and right after the baby is born. New moms always feel stretched to the wire and a good day of pampering is a wonderful way to unwind and relax. Then they can enjoy being a new mom and having a precious baby.
Good luck and congrats to all of your friends!

5 friends with babies?!! Oh, my God! Winter is coming, I do like sleeping bags for babies: so useful! I've got main as a present because I never thought it can be so practical. Microwave Steriliser with bottles..You can add a voucher from a good baby shop ( in UK Mothercare will do) BabyGap doing very high quality clothes for babies/kids and they put them in a special bag if you tell that it's a present. just try to avoid that small sizes: usualy parents have tons of them up to 3 months, but after it's a gap and sometimes it's not that easy to get out with very little ones. And they grow so fast!

Handknitted or crocheted items like blankies, cardigans, hats and booties are always appreciated because they are a keepsake. Any handmade things I received when my sons were born are treasured and tucked away. Plus, handmade things are back in fashion big time.
If you don't knit or crochet or don't live near a store where you can buy them, clothes, of course, are fun to buy. Most moms actually really enjoy picking out their own and they will get tons from everyone.
Get them a basket full of basics: receiving blankets, onesies (several because babies go through them..don't get size small because babies grow out of them quickly), jammies, bibs, socks, baby bath, wipes, plus a gift certificate for a manicure/pedicure/massage or even Starbucks. Be sure to spend your time on stuff the moms will really need. They are the gifts that are appreciated most because they will help the new moms out in the first few months.
I had to add one more thing...something that I think most babies and moms love are those little baby bathrobes. They are so adorable and babies love to be wrapped up in them after a bath.

A true friend would not buy expensive presents, just buy a nice card and inside write a message saying the present you give is your time, you promise to stand in and help out with anything mum is finding difficult initially, and offer to babysit twice in the first 6 months. Tell the parents it's up to them to 'claim' their gift when it's needed. A gift like this would have been priceless to me.

I know I would have loved a gift where I could keep track of things right from the start. Maybe a baby book or growth calender (for the first first year). I never thought of it until later when my girl was a bit older. Also a card and maybe a ratlle or stuffy.

How about a gift basket with the book "What to Expect the First Year" for the mother, a couple of outfits or pajamas for the baby and a blanket. Winter is coming up and I never had enough cute washable blankets!
