The flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) has simple leaves which are opposite across the stem.

Flowering dogwood have simple leaves. In fact all dogwood Cornus spp have simple leaves as well as have opposite branching except for the aptly named Alternative-Leaf Dogwood also known as the Pagoda Dogwood which has alternate branching. Cornus alternifolia

I know all species of the genus Cornus have simple leaves and most of them have opposite
leaves as well, but there is at least one species of
the genus with alternate leaves.
