While some may disparage their uncontrived simplicity, I love the hypnotic quality found in Neil Young's extended solos in "Like a Hurricane", "Cowgirl in the Sand", and "Down by the River", among others by the Canadian master songwriter/rocker/cool guy.

Oh my god. So MANY to choose from...

Here are a couple of my favorites from off the beaten path a bit:

1) Dickey Betts and Duane Allman trading solos on the "Live at Fillmore East" version of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed."

2) Frank Zappa shredding madly at the end of "Muffin Man" on the "Bongo Fury" collection.

3) Steve Morse on the live version of "The Bash" from the "California Screamin" CD.

4) "For the Love of God," Steve Vai on "Passion and Warfare"

5) "Cliffs of Dover," Eric Johnson on "Ah Via Musicom"

6) "Circles," Joe Satriani on "Surfing with the Alien"

7) "Kill Me (Ce Soir)," Golden Earring (George Kooymans, guitar) from the "Switch" album.

8) "Stone of Love," Blue Oyster Cult (Buck Dharma, guitar), from the "Curse of the Hidden Mirror" set.

9) "Air Dance," Black Sabbath (Tony Iommi, guitar) from the "Never Say Die" album.

10) "Lazy," Deep Purple (Ritchie Blackmore, guitar) from "Machine Head."

11) "Caledonia," Robin Trower from the "Long Misty Days" LP.

I could go on and on and on and on...
