I'd like to say Research...but in all honesty, the net is still dominated by Porn.

Its a sad world, but it *is* improving.

I would say communication. People use it for personal email, and most businesses now use it for business communication as well.

Research.... including references for education and religion.... are also a very wide use of the internet. The entire Bible is on the web in several places.. and most every other good classic piece of literature as well.

Shopping is a major use on the internet, especially sites like eBay, which allow purchases without the use of a credit card. I buy almost everything on the internet now, and the postal system is thriving from this new use.

Gambling is becoming a problem on the internet; in fact the US Senate is working on putting through a law to prevent gambling on the internet.

I refuse to believe porn is the most common use.

It's first, intended, "implied-use-when-invented" use is that of transffering scientific data and information. It was supposed to have been used as a tool to better the human race.

However, we all know know that it's used for all kinds of things, most radically different from that of it's proposed usage.
