usually for the same price the desktop will have a higher spec and better performance but at the expense of the portability of the laptop
however if you are just burning dvds then a laptop would be fine, except for heating issues...
if you want to play games then get a dedicated graphics card, there is more options for desktops and you have a better chance of upgrading the system when and if you want to

After owning my own computer store and being and Internet service provider, i would suggest a desktop unit, you have more of an upgrade path later down the track, with laptops you will find that they have an all in one motherboard, so say for instance your video card blew up, you would have to replace the motherboard just for one component, with a desktop all you have to do is replace the card, be careful tho, as some dealers will use all in one motherboards, i personally dont like them and i prefer to be able to interchange componets when necessary.

Generally you can find better desktops than laptops, but laptops have the advantage of portablity. Overall, though I'd say that laptops are better, because, along with portability, you can find laptops that compete with the best desktops in terms of speed.
Also, with regards to what the person right above me said about floppy drives, almost NO compuers have floppy drives anymore.

depends what you are going to use it for. You said you like to write DVDs and such. Well if that's the case you are obviously going to need more disk space, so a laptop wouldn't be a smart choice. Laptops are more convenient then anything as for taking your work with you.
So go for the desktop!

they both work the same way, the difference is mobility, if you spend a lot of time on the road than at home, laptops are good, desktops are docked at home but it's very flexible you can upgrade and customize it, you can play hardcore 3d games without the graphic limitations, it really depends on how you will use it.
as for me, i do everything at home with my desktop computer and on the road, i use my ipaq for internet, music, calendar and other small stuff it's better than carrying a 3-pound computer =)

Just depends on whether you need the mobility of the laptop.
If not, get a desktop.
Also, I do not like the fact that the new laptop computers do not have a floppy drive.

Sorry to burst your bubble yet any laptop you get which could definitely play video games in finished HD with good snap shots settings is going to be somewhat huge and cumbersome. i assume you ought to circulate with an ultrabook, do only not assume too lots graphical potential

It's all a matter of personal preference. You have to ask yourself what will be best for you, have to sit at home or be able to take it with you.
