Is this the bronze 1000 peso coin with Sor Juana de Asbaje on it? This type was minted from 1988 to 1992, before Mexico remonetized. On 1 January 1993, Mexico released the 'Peso Nuevo', which is equal to 1000 old pesos and your coin (if my earlier assumption was correct) is one new peso or approximately 9 cents US.
I don't have a catalog at home, so I apologize if my assumption is incorrect.

1000 pesos would be worth 90 bucks. However, given that it's a coin i doubt it's acutally a 1,000 peso coin. 10 Pesos, on the other hand are worth about 90 cents...from a website (listed below
Coins are minted in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 centavo pieces. Coins are also available in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 20 pesos.
Banknotes are printed in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos. The most commonly used are the 100 and 200 Peso notes. 500 and 1000 Peso banknotes are hard to spend for small purchases, as they 'rob' the trader's change.

You probably need to go to laplata.com, to figure the date it was minted and its silver content. Mexican peso's last I saw were 11 to the $USD. However if your coin was minted before specific dates, it has silver content values it above its face value.
Good Luck

While many large US banks will exchange foreign paper money, most will not exchange coins.
