They put green or blue socks and KEYED them out using digital effects processor. It is called Keying.

It is the same technology that News Stations use to put the map behind the weather man. The weather man stands in front of a green or blue screen and then they key in the map behind him. Sometimes on the news you will notice part of a tie or hair looks like it dissapearing. That is because the computer recognized that shade as green or blue. Lighting has to be just right to pull it off.

It's called cgi, computer generated imaging. They digitize the scenes and can block out or add images. The same way they made the hobbits look small in Lord of the Rings.

if you get the DVD I think they have a bonus feature on there where they show you. but it was all done with computers
