yes, there are flaws and bad aspects of democracy because there is no set definition of democracy, each state can interpret what it means for them in a different way. For us it may mean we have freedom of speech, religion etc, and that all people may participate in politics through elections, but it may not mean the same thing in another state, and the democratic systems are different in all countries. You may expect a democracy to have a fair election system where parties receive seats in parliament that are in proportion to the number of votes received, but that doesn't exist in the UK, as we have a majoritarian system where nearly all the time the party with the most votes gets over 50% of seats in Parliament. There are other problems in democracy in that there is a problem with apathy in many democratic states, which could be seen as a statement that people don't care about democracy, or they are against it, if they show no wish to participate in democracy.

I think the Democratic system we have in the United Kingdom is the best of a bad bunch. The First Past the Post must remain. If we change to Proportional Representation there would not be any single party with an overall majority. This would lead to shady dealing in some smoke filled room [I assume they won"t ban smoking at Westminster next July] You know what they say about a Camel, it"s a Horse designed by a committee. I do however think the system could be improved by having say half the MP"s standing for re-election every 2 years instead of the 4/5 years as it now stands, this would make them more accountable for their actions, and more sympathetic of the Public"s views.

Democracy came from the Greek words, demos, meaning people, and kratein, meaning to rule. I believe that democracy has been violated today. It is like we live in a huge 'Big brother' world and we are being watched. Democracy is difficult to survive because people tend to want force their opinions rather than discuss them. Democracy should also result to the welfare of the people of the state and their needs whereas now it is being used to satisfy our politicians needs for power and wealth.
In our society Democracy is an outopia.

The United States is not a democracy it is a Republic. We vote for those that represent us in the government—we have no direct control.

So far it appears that democratic societies are more free and open. They also have the most robust economies. The downside is that they sometimes get what they ask/vote for…

The thing with Democracy, is that what we think of as democracy really is not. So your question needs to be refined because the easily led would start to associate answers for real democracy with the sham we live under. Democracy is good but we don't have it.

The worst thing about democracy is the "tyranny of the majority"... this is seen in a mob-rule mentality that can take over a large part of the population. this is how minorities are subjected to racist laws by a majority vote.

the good side of democracy is that the will of the majority is respected as law. this is usually a good thing, as people have more control over their own lives.

Unfortunately, we don't have democracy. the first past the post electoral system is undemocratic. Unelected house of Lords is undemocratic. No written constitution, no democratic control over the judiciary, no democratic control over most of the civil service. The UK is feudal, with Teflon Tone as president with support from his cronies.
