I have already replaced the thermalcouple, which did not resolve the problem. The pilot lights initially, as I hold the valve open, but goes out as soon as I lift off of the button to switch from "pilot" to "on".

We had the same problem and after 4 repairmen, finally got someone who could fix it. They had to change the transformer. Hope this helps!

Just the end of the thermocoupler should be in the flame if the possition isn,t right it won,t work. Was the thermocoupler new? how long did you hold down the button? You could also need a new gas valve but I would test the thermocoupler first. No its not the transformer if its a milivolt system because there is no transformer.

Yes--- first insure the thermocouple tip is properly installed and the flame is hitting it -- this is important. Inspect the gas orvice and line for spiderwebs, dead bugs, dust blocking the gas. Consider a faulty gas valve if the above does not correct the problem. Good Luck.

I had that problem once, turns out there was a "draft"
coming from the roof, once we sealed it, the pilot
stayed lit.

it has to be the thermocouple. installed it right? Why did you install it in the first place? what was wrong? is the gas valve dirty, clogged?
