Girls wore full skirts that came down to at least the knee, waistbands that sit at the natural waist (an inch or two above your belly button), collared blouses, lots of dresses and blouse/shirt sets. Pants were acceptable only when lounging around the house.

Guys wore button-down shirts, t-shirts, slacks, jeans-basically what they wear today, except that the shirts fit and the pants didn't hang off of their butts.

For more information, go to www.costumes.org and click on the Costume History link. There's a whole section on the 50s.
