Sometimes. Often sharks will come up from below in deeper water, as in the case of surfers. If they're attacking in shallow water, they might be seen, but they move much faster than humans in the water, and it would be difficult to get away, even if it were seen.

Sharks often use a "bit and spit" method of attack, coming up fast from below or behind. They rip out a lump, then let the prey bleed and weaken before going in for the kill. The image of the circling fin is not that accurate.

Well i don't think it would really make a difference. If a shark is close enough for you to see it, your lunch! Its kind of like falling f a cliff, you see it all the way in slo-mo but you can't do anything about it

it depends which direction the shark comes from, if it comes from behind you obviously won't see it, usually once a shark gets the taste of human blood he wont take another bite, they only bite humans by mistake they don't actually like the taste of us
