Four or Five.

Apply to one school that you know that you will get into. Apply to one school that is a reach -- where you have a shot of getting in, but not a great chance. Apply to two or three of the best schools that you have a good shot of getting into.

I would apply to around 5 to 8 colleges. Some reach, some match and some safety.

I have heard that you should apply to about six schools: two that you stand little chance of being accepted into, two that you will probably get into, and two that you will be accepted into without any questions asked. After the responses from the colleges are returned, you can decide amongst the ones that accepted you and will admit you into their college.

I applied to three schools. One was a safety net, a school that I will surely get admitted to. One was a match; not so hard to get into. The other one is a far-fetched but still a possibility you will be admitted to (you pass the general selection criteria).
Basically, choose the program that you really want to get into, and choose the schools from there. Make sure your choices of schools are reasonable and within your reach.

I would suggest applying to the ones ( more than one) you would like to attend and that matches your career plan or just career and hope for the best. Good luck and don't give up hope, keep trying.

I would recommend 3-5. There is a chance you might not get into your first choice, so you need a second choice. That way, if you don't get accepted to one, it doesn't kill you.
