I'm in highschool, and lately i've been thinking about what I want to major in in college.I make really good grades,do alot in my school and i have a wide variety of interests. So I came up with a few majors:Musical Theatre, Mathmatics, Computer Science, Music, or Media Studies. I told my family that I wanted to go to WIU and major in musical theatre, but i was unsure. I really love musical theatre it incorporates three things im really good at. I have done alot of things that involve singing and acting in highschool like chorus, speech, the musicals, and lots more. Everyone knows me as a person who is really good at theatre and thats what I see me when I look at myself. My parents really didnt agree, they really want me to do the whole mathmatics computer science thing because it will problly insure me a job and pay more. And though i really love math and am very good at it, I love theatre more, most of my family didnt go to college and we arnt very wealthy. I'm very unsure help me.

Things are tight right now. The relative ease or hardness of finding a job after graduation depends on your degree. Majoring in musical theatre, music, or media studies are not in demand majors, nor will they ever be. People who major in those areas are kind of consider jokes by other majors. Those are the people who have trouble paying off their student loans.
Things for math or computer science majors are a lot better. There are jobs for those people. If you like speaking, have you thought about advertising?

I am thinking of the same thing - although I did speak to a college representative lately and she said that it would be possible to major in a fine arts subject (like your musical theatre) and still be able to major in another field (like your computers/math). What it boils down to though is in order to double major with subjects like finearts you may have to take a few courses over the summer to meet the requirements. When getting anything theatre or art related it is always good to have a back up plan in case broadway doesn't love you as much as your high school. So do both - it'll make you and your folks happy. Good luck!

Well you're never too old to go back to school for computer science or mathematics, and if you go now but quit to get back into theater you'll become obsolete once you fall behind the current trends in computers. My brother is a computer scientist and he's always telling me how he needs to go to all these seminars on updates and new threats etc. You have to stay up to speed. If you go in to theater and you decide after ten or fifteen years that it wasn't really your gig, go into mathmatics or computer science. You may not get the shot at theater again.
Also, you need to look at your education as what it is, an education. If you consider University as an institution of financial inhancement, you should probably go into computer science.

I say go with your heart and be realistic about life and career in general. Remember, Musical theater is very competitive and is hard to make a living on that type of occupation's salary. Ask any actors they will tell you wages were terrible and hard to live by at first, but they continued their passion with hard work and persevered. Also, always have another type of job or career as a back up just in case things do not go according to your plan. life is not fair trust me. Good luck.

If you enjoy computers I'd select computer science and minor in theater. You will make a lot of money and if you want to you can perform in theater groups etc. for entertainment during non work hours. Always keep something you love to do out of your work time...when a love becomes a job you're finished.

You dont have to make a decision right away...in fact, not a lot of people do...its ok to mark undecided. Then you can take intro classes to the majors that you are interested and decide what fits you best...

Think about what you are good at and what you like to do. You don't want a career you don't like and are very bad at.
