Providing your assailant is roughly the same size as you, is unarmed, and you have already tried to diffuse the situation? I have been told punching is dangerous as if you do it incorrectly you risk breaking your hand, whereas your brow is a plate of solid bone.
Was watching this thing on sky and apparently the headbutt is the second best method of primary self-defence, after this..wait for it!...
'Knee your assailant in the groin- even if they are female it is likely to bring them to their knees. As they double up, hook your thumbs in to their eye sockets and press inwards with moderate force, whilst bringing their face down on to your upraised knee,' Gruesome, eh?!
What do you think? I always thought a toe in the balls'd be better than a butt....

Actually, I just strike the pressure point on the neck that leaves them unable to move for about 3 minutes. Then I can do whatever I want to them.

This knee in the groin thing is garbage, they teach wee girlies to do this as a form of self defence but ANY guy can instinctively avoid such a move.
Now let us turn our attention to the head butt, or "Glasgow Kiss". It only works when there is an element of surprise. Timing is everything and you need to be standing very close to your adversary to pull this one off. If you miss, you will be off balance and in a vulnerable position.

if ur worried about damaging your fist, u can use the 'heel ' of your hand. Punching a wall would hurt, but smacking it with the heel of your hand should be fine. thus you can employ alot more force. Aim to knock their head clean off.
Also a hard jab to the throat is effective but dangerous, as u could kill them.
Grabbing them and biting their nose off helps put off other potential assailants, but is extreme and should only be used on football supporters.
Stamping on the side of the kneecap isa gud one, as you may hopefully cripple them.
if you do martial arts and learn to form a fist and punch properly, you should not get hurt (until their mates jump on yer back).
If someone is gonna hurt ya, do 'em, and badly. You dont deserve to go to hospital but they do. An entirely prefferable outcome is for them to get hurt instead of you. Glass 'em if necessary.

sorry to blow a trumpet here, but I'm double black belt, one in two dans, do not go for a head butt, it entirely depends on you heads angle and theirs and unless you know what you're doing you could end up knocking out yourself!!! One straight up punch open handed underneath the assailants chin without warning will give you enough time to subject the next move.

no. the best line of self defence is to not let the situation get that far then no violence will be needed. but if you are not in control of the situation hit them hard as you can in the middle of there chest in between the breasts. they will stop for a long time and not be able to breath for a while giving you time to walk away

Its as good a place as any to go for first.I personally prefer the right foot and gooley method on the grounds of head butting people gives me bad headaches. So 1 to the nuts to drop them and a knee to the face to finish does it for me..

The Glasgow kiss is a great method of self defence when actuated with the element of surprise, try to look as though you are talking your way out of the situation then BANG, nut them, it works for me !

A headbutt is a horrible first line of self defense. Whatever pain/damage you inflict on your opponent, you also inflict on yourself. It's a wash. Go with something that gives you an advantage.

u have to be able to get them right on the bridge of the nose with quite a lot of force behind it for it to do anything... try, punching someone in the side just under the ribs.. punch in and upwards in one swift movement and it will hurt any one and everyone for you are connecting with an organ...

i prefer a palm strike just to the underside of the nose. if done correctly this can break ur opponents nose & even cause death so its pretty nasty. this should be used as a last resort though. best technique is the r.l.f (run like f**k)
