I'm thinking about trying out for the freshman cheerleading squad next year, but I'm worried that I won't do very well.....I've never actually cheered, but I took gymnastics for 7 years and I can still do everything I learned....which is probably up to something like a roundoff backhandspring, backtuck....I'm 5'0 and I weigh around 85 lbs. So, I would probably be a flyer right? Should I try out and go for it? Or just stick to studying (which I REALLY don't want to do)

As a current cheer coach, I have to encourage you to try out.

First of all, it appears as though you have the gymnastics ability that most teams would envy. That is a big plus! CAPITAL P!

Secondly, you have a very good grade average....meaning that you must be a very good student. Is this because you spend all of your time studying? If not, and you are only spending an hour or so a night in the books, practicing will not hurt your school work. This is what most coaches and parents worry about the most!

Finally, you have as good of a chance as anyone in making it in the squad. Remember, that teamwork is key. Learn your tryout routine (so that you could do it with your eyes closed), have good attitude and remember to bring out your best. Smile, Be cheerful...afterall isn't that what wanting to be a cheerleader is all about?

Last but not least, don't fret if you don't make it the first year. Lots of girls don't. It doesn't mean that you aren't good, it just means that you are as polished as some of the others were.

Good Luck in whatever you decide.

Go for it! Gymnastics and Cheerleading are similar in alot of ways so I'm sure you will do GREAT!! I didn't stick with cheerleading because I always felt like I wasn't good enough, looking back I think I was pretty good though and wish I had stayed with it longer! Good Luck! And remember to never stop SMILING!

GO FOR IT...HELL YEAH!!!! Y not, what do u have to lose. U should totally do it. Trust me!! If u can still do all the things u learned in gymnastics, thats great. Cheerleaders look so cool when they do all those back flips and all that ****. Trust me, u never know, u might be so good, u'll be put in varsity. Im in high school, and my high school has the suckiest cheerleading team EVER!!! Its a very small team.....only like 3 of them can tumble, and do all of that. OH! and if u guys have pep ralleys @ school people will cheer for u like crazy if u do those flips. trust me!!!!!!!!

Being a cheerleader means different things at different schools.

For instance, some places it means that you're part of a competitive team that makes guest appearances at football games.

In some places it means you actually lead cheers that the crowd is supposed to say too.

In most places, it means you're an ambassador (meaning that if you're a low-life or a jerk you can forget about being picked).

I'd talk with the coach of the team you're trying to make and see if you can do the things they're looking for. Then I'd ask some juniors and seniors for their opinions. Above all, ask yourself, "Do I fit in with these people?"

go out for it if you want to but you still have to study or at least pass in all of your classes or else you get kicked off of the squad
