The simple subject of a sentence is the noun or pronoun that completes the action in a sentence. For instance,

"Jimmy went to the grocery store."

Although "Jimmy" and "store" are both nouns, since the verb "went" is completed by "Jimmy," then "Jimmy" is the subject.

First: look for the verb (action or state of being)
Second: find the one noun that goes with it.

The simple subject has to be two things
1. It has to be a noun (person, place, or thing)
2. It is the ONE noun that is doing or being something.

Example sentence: My little dog barks when someone comes to the house.
The simple subject is "dog" because it is the one noun that is doing something.

A simple subject is a SYNTACTIC (means related to the patterns of formation of sentences and phrases from words) UNIT that functions as one of the two main constituents of a simple sentence, (one subject and one predicate) the other being the predicate. The subject is a noun, noun phrase, or noun substitute (pronoun) which often refers to the one performing the action or being in the state expressed by the predicate, as He in "He gave notice". Ref. It's the main noun performing an action.

Example: The silly little boy thought that he would chew gum and get away with it.

The simple subject: boy
The simple predicate: thought
