Yes, gift cards are absolutely meaningless, but I buy those on occasion. I have relatives on my list who complain if they don't receive a gift. On the other hand, those same people will complain if I send them something they think is cheap or shows I don't really care about them. Oddly, they get to decide if I care about them, not me. These people only rate a gift card - a token gift that says to the receiver "You're done for another year".

Myself, I'd much prefer a miniature bottle of whiskey to a gift card, but that's just me.

I think gift cards came about because there were so many ungrateful little sob's out there. I was raised to be appreciative of the gift no matter what it was. But that's in public. And there were alot of gifts that didn't really impress me. I had (and have ) to remind myself that when I receive a gift, it's the thought that counts, not the treasure in my hands. Liking it is a bonus. That's why there's so many yard sales........to get rid of all the stuff you can live without.

Some people are extremely hard to shop for, and if you know a store that they enjoy shopping at but you don't know exactly what they want then it is at least better to give them a gift card and let them pick out what they want. To me that is a more thoughtful gift to give to someone when you don't know what they want because it is at least better than buying something that they end up not liking. So to answer your question, I think it's perfectly alright to give someone a gift card if you don't know what to get them as long as you know that the person likes shopping at the place where the gift card is for.

Most people would like to buy things on their own and gift cards would save you time as well instead of shopping the whole day just to find out that the other person is not that happy with your gift. Well, its' the thought that counts, right? Gift cards are fine as long as they can really buy something with that, otherwise, it will be useless. Goodluck!

I think gift cards are perfect! There is always someone on your list that you are baffeled on what to get them. So giving them a gift card is always a better bet cause then they can pick out what they like and may need! No way would I ever give socks, underwear or ties to anyone.....lol!! That to me is something you would buy only if you need them for yourself! I love getting gift cards!! I always get them from my parents for the 99 steakhouse or Smokey Bones rib house!! There is nothing wrong with gift cards!!

As I've gotten older and people are getting pickier, I've found gift cards to be the way to go, unless someone tells me what they specifically want.

It's easier and better than going to 15 different malls to try to figure out what they may want, but you know you really don't have a clue. They then, can get what they want and you know they won't take it back.
Plus, if they wait til the day after Christmas, they can get DOUBLE the stuff!

I do have to say though, it does take a little away from the fun of shopping and having big boxes under the tree.

I think gift cards are the greatest thing in the world i like getting them so much that I only give them to a few choice people on my list. And what is wrong with socks? I also like getting new pairs of socks on every occasion that i get a gift.
Maybe you think to much of your self. I believe a gift should be appreciated no matter what it is. I think most people today have forgotten that they should be great full to get any thing at all.

I think gift cards are a good idea. I would rather get a gift card to a store I like, that way I can get whatever I like, instead of getting a shirt that i would never wear.

It depends on who the gift is for. When shopping for someone that has everything, then what do you do? Yes it's acceptable, or someone who is not that close. I personally love gift cards and socks!!! Actually I love anything, or just a card!!!

I love giving gift cards to the kids in the family and they love getting them. I also give gift cards to my mother and father in law but they are specific to their favorite restaurant, and they really like that, it gives them an opportunity to go out and eat at least 2 times.
