Use a wire brush, I personally would not use water on it, that will surely create more rust. After getting most of it off, you can treat it with a propriety "rust remover", this tends to seal the cast iron and should prevent the rust returning. You can get it at a hardware shop or even a "motor spares" shop.

That depends on how bad it is. The worse it is the more time it takes. Soak in oil. If it's for cooking use veg. oil. Otherwise use machine oil or whatever. Let it soak for a day or two depending on how bad it is. then heat it in the oven 350 for a good 20 min. Carefully remove and let it cool. Wipe clean and repeat if needed. With skillets it may need oil and thin sliced potatoes lining it and put on burner and heat up on med. for about 20 min. then let cool and remove potatoes and wipe clean. If it's not a skillet or cooking object let it sit in the sun and do the same thing. It takes a while. You may have to waste a pan of cornbread to get the skillet back to good shape. good luck! Never use soap on a cast iron skillet. use hot water only when needed and wipe out and oil and wipe again. keep in oven or covered cabinet and this will last forever.

Hi, had a homeowners inspection and for my oil tank that is rusting at the bottom, he said to get a rust brush and scrape it off and then seal with rust preventative paint...

I have 2 cast iron skillets. you need to scrub in very hot water and soap. put on the stove and let the stove dry it. then you HAVE to cover lightly with like a hard grease like Crisco. that should do .

There are a few things u can do.. if you are going to repaint them then try sanding them with sand paper.. or u can get paint thinner and that usually takes it off but is messy to use...and I have seen Oxy used also.. try lime away or oven cleaner!!!
