I think it means it is better to find a way to bring some good to a bad situation rather than to give in conpletely to despair because if everyone "lights a small candle" then there won't be as much darkness anymore.

Sure its better to light a candle, so you can see! But what if you don't have a candle or a match. What if it's so dark you can't find your candle or you're out of matches. What do you do then?
Maybe you should just flip the light switch and see what happens!

I think it just means that although a small candle will not provide a huge amount of light or illumination, it is preferable to the alternative of complaining about the darkness and doing nothing to improve the situation. -something like that anyway.

Cursing the darkness solves nothing, your still in darkness.
By lighting one candle you have displaced the darkness in your surroundings.

it's better to spend your energy lighting one candle than cursing the darkness.
You will get farther by lighting a candle, then by wasting your time cursing (doing nothing).
A little is better than nothing.

Because light and darkness can't be together.
If you are in a room, which is full of darkness.
Now you want to get rid of this darkness.
You fight with darkness, you want to through out the darkness.
Then you want to fill in the bags to through out
But nothing works, you bring one stick
And start to beat the darkness
nothing works, you get tired, fighting with darkness.
And suddenly you go out lit one candle and come in
and darkness disappear
easly, because light and darkness can't exist together.
Infect darkness means absense of light, because darkness
doesn't exist. its absense of light.
Darkness means unconscious
light means consciousness
Generly we do things unconsciously, which makes us suffer.
In other words we are the creater of our sufferings.
LIt a small candle means, bring your consciousness to your unconscios act so you can see clear that why the things are happening that way.
How one can make mistakes consciously

It means that no matter how big the problem (the darkness) you can do at least some small thing to improve it, and in some cases that may be enough.

Better to have the company and entertainment of a flicker of light then to sit in the darkness alone with your own thoughts.
