I have to write a speech on the subject, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what makes for a successful venture. . . . . I want to try and make the talk vaguely amusing though. I thought you guys might have some good ideas!

I'd suggest you read something like 'The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People'.

You can also learn a lot by reading biographies of successful people. Regardless of the field, I've found the same character traits will usually arise:

* Dedication
* Ruthlessness
* A passion for what you do
* A Clear Direction (Without a goal or target, how do you know where you're aiming for)
* Bulding the appropriate infrstructure (whether that be working environment and/or the team around you)

As for making the talk amusing - why not use the opposite points to those above - explaining why half-hearted approaches, a lack of passion, laziness etc have contributed to failed approaches in history.

The key to success is having confidence in what you do.

With regard to your speech, write something out, read it, and then re-write it. Over and over again.

The best ideas normally come when you are asleep, or when you may wake up and think, "hey, that's a good idea" Have a notebook by the side of your bed, to write down your notes.

Try to keep your speech short, but amusing, you will be surprised how much you can say if you collate all your thoughts and ideas beforehand.

Good luck!

This is old hat, I'm afraid. It's a very eighties question. Forget ventures, think personal. The keys to success are contentment, a decent home, a loving partner. The rest is all b*******. Make it vaguely amusing by telling your audience to p*** off.

Depends on your definition of success (also on keys)
Being born, and being the eldest son might be the key to getting a way with something.
Whether that is success or not is a different story.
Marrying the right man might be considered the key to success though especially if blond.

# 1 Show up for the task at hand. #2 complete the task at hand to the best of your ability. #3 Don't discount anyone for any reason; You may end up working for them or someone like them someday. Listen well; if you do, you learn things that your existance may not provide you except for this one person. #4 Everything in moderation. Everything - mind altering substances - the oppisite sex - religion- taking yourself too seriously - advice from others. #5 Don't be afraid to try and then fail. If you don't fail once in a while you don't learn some important lessons. #6 & #1 Wake up and believe in yourself & go about your day. #7 Have a plan and a goal but don't put it in concrete; this is life, and like golf it is a game to be played not to be won. #8 Find a partner in life that you trust and trusts you. # 8 Guard yourself to the fact that evil people exist and never become one. #9 Dress for sucess and understand this sometimes may mean looking like a slob.

to use your brain and let your audience know its working by talking on a subject you have a knowledge of and don't talk a lot of nonsense get it over don't drag it out and if you want to slip a little joke in you might have heard then do that and if it causes a chuckle your going in the right direction

that would depend on how you determine success. One man's success is anothers failure as the saying goes. Is a man who digs ditches all day and comes home to a happy and loving family a success?

Learn to love yourself. This will give you the confidence you need.
Learn to enjoy hard work and have pride in your work.
Be dependable.
Say what you mean and mean what you say.
Teamwork.
Play fair and not use people to gain your access up the ladder (not that you need to do this in order to succeed, but your co-workers will at least respect you when you do).
Give credit where credit is due.

Being true to yourself is the only worthy route
Success does not necessarily mean fame or wider recognition
