None. He has little or no training as a scientist.

From the microsoft site:
"In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft's chief executive officer. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair.

In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen."

Others say it was his freshman year:
"Gates was accepted to Harvard and began attending in 1974, intending to study either Mathematics or Law. But college wasn't where Gates wanted to be, and he dropped out late in his freshman year."

I doubt his scientific credentials since his recent charity work towards AIDS research. A scientist uses his mind to make things and then to sell them, "earning" back what he "spent" creating it. He doesn't just give things away. If Bill Gates wanted to do AIDS research then he should've started a company that does that, for profit.

Charitable institutions are doomed to fail because there's no motivation except giving, and people can only give so much before there's nothing left except bitterness and anger. The only thing I'd volunteer for is to burn it down. Not because I want people to die of AIDS, but because the values he's built it upon are pathetic.

In my opinion, Bill Gates's field of study is known only to himself - computers does have it's marvels. We have come this far in science/evolution and it's high time we evolve in ourselves!

I played poker with him and the $2-$4-$8 table in Las Vegas once. Very nice guy.

I would say he is a Software Engineer. And just a plain good guy.

I think I read that he went to M.I.T, I can't remember exactly. He might have taken science as an elective. You wouldn't classify him as a scientist: genius, but not a scientist.
