Escape to Witch Mountain (1975)

Return from Witch Mountain (1978)

AND

Escape to Witch Mountain (1995) (TV)

"Escape to Witch Mountain" is a popular Disney movie released in 1975. Many adults who were children at that time remember the film with great fondness, and the movie has been popular on video and DVD. Disney even remade the movie as a direct-to-cable TV movie (with Peter Rader as director) in 1995, but the remake has not come close to achieving the beloved status of the original.

The movie "Escape to Witch Mountain" is based on the same-titled children's book by Alexander Key. Escape to Witch Mountain by Alexander Key was first published in 1968.
-------------------------------------------------------------

But a question that is frequently asked is if the movie and/or book was based on the popular "People" stories by science fiction author Zenna Henderson.

Zenna Henderson was raised as a Latter-day Saint in predominantly Latter-day Saint communities of Arizona. As an adult she was not active in the Church, but many elements of Latter-day Saint theology and community life can be glimpsed in the richly detailed descriptions of the alien "People" featured in dozens of her stories.

"Escape to Witch Mountain" is not a direct adaptation of any of Zenna Henderson's short stories about "The People," but nobody can read Henderson's stories and Key's book (or see the Disney movie) without being struck by the many similarities. Henderson's "People" stories were written and published in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, some pre-dating Alexander Key's book by nearly two decades.

As much as Escape to Witch Mountain is a part of my past...and still resonates deeply inside me...
I suggest Zennna Henderson's book..."Ingathering"

It is the complete collection of Zenna Henderson's famous "People" stories. These stories are about an alien race known only as "The People" whose members appear human but possess various psychic powers. Among their gifts (each is born with a different set, from among a small number of possibilities) are the ability to fly, levitate objects, read minds, heal, and (in rare individuals) see the future. The People fled their dying planet and a handful of them made their way to Earth, where problems during their arrival scattered them into different groups, and sometimes separate, orphaned individuals. Eventually they set up two small communities in the isolated deserts and canyons of Arizona, where they remained largely apart from the people of Earth, fearing what would happen if the world knew about aliens living in their midst.

Not only is Henderson the best known woman among Mormon SF writers, Ingathering is distinctly feminine, without being politically "Feminist." The main characters in most of these stories are strong, intelligent females. Among the People, gender equality is a given. Both men and women sit on the council of Elders which leads each Group of People. Henderson's women are often outspoken, sometimes a little rebellious, but they also cherish their roles as sisters, mothers, and wives. Henderson isn't a mouthpiece for any particular contemporary ideology. Readers tempted to "score" these stories on any kind of liberal/conservative or progressive/traditional scale may find themselves thwarted by an outlook which is internally cohesive but wholly apart from such dichotomies.

Nobody writes of children, women, and adolescents on the cusp of adulthood...like Zenna...her stories envelop you in warmth that is our nature indeed...love...compassion...and what it really means to be part of a group...and human within that group.

A beautiful writer who shares with the audience beautiful themes...I suggest a reading of her...at a time and place of your choosing...

Last link is her book on Amazon...Peace.
